Puritan Ground Master (Earth Line Interference Eliminator)
The ground or earth connection serves as the absolute reference for all vital system voltages and must remain silent and stable to achieve ultimate fidelity from your system. However, there are challenges:
Nearly every modern electrical appliance, such as kitchen and laundry appliances, chargers, TVs, and PCs, is equipped with a high-frequency switching power supply. To meet emissions regulations, these appliances use their earth connection as a dumping ground for the interference they generate. As a result, your HiFi Earth/Ground connection may be connected to thousands of Earth Line polluting appliances via substations serving numerous houses.
Long before the issue of high-frequency interference on the Earth Line became as serious as it is today, knowledgeable audiophiles were employing additional ground rods to provide independent Earth to their HiFi installations. While this solution may seem elegant, it poses significant dangers for most current installations. This practice risks the potentially massive current from any fault between your HiFi and your local substation finding the easiest path to Earth through your HiFi, leading to expensive and possibly tragic results. This is why the use of additional HiFi Ground Rods is specifically prohibited by current UK Wiring Regulations, except in very specific circumstances.
By using the Puritan Ground Master, the hazards (and illegality) associated with additional HiFi Ground Rods are completely avoided. This is achieved without compromising the effective route to ground and the removal of undesirable noise disturbance frequencies on the Earth Line.
When used alongside an additional ground rod, the Puritan Ground Master safely isolates the potentially dangerous route to Earth of mains frequency currents, while permitting offending noise and disturbance frequencies to be efficiently eliminated via an extremely low impedance route to ground.
Additional Notes:
- A single-core cable is required to run from the Ground Rod to the Ground Master.
- Smaller diameter cables are easier to handle, while thicker cables offer lower resistance over length and can provide performance gains.
- Depending on the type of soil, further improvements can be achieved by using additional Ground Rods linked together at a minimum spacing of 1.2 metres.
- Ground Rods rely on moisture to link electrically to the Earth, so watering the area during dry spells will improve performance.
- Further performance gains can be achieved using moisture-retaining clay or conductive aggregates to surround the Ground Rods, such as Bentonite and Marconite.
